50MHz Trophy Contest

For the last two years the Es gods have done well for this contest - but the 2021 even was even better - perhaps helped by our move towards the sunspot maxima. Though opinions varied, those operating on Saturday were happier than those on Sunday. Your Adjudicator (as MW8R) found decent Es on Saturday but Sunday morning was slow with occasional bursts. Last years UK ODX was G8W's qso with D4Z at 4308km but the 2021 event included a qso between M0WCO and JA1JRK at 10564km and another between G0VHF/P and BI6LJF at 8382km. The band had been open to the US just before the start of the contest but in the event it dropped out and only one stateside QSO resulted - that of G8T with N8XA/P at 6001km.

Logging accuracy was noticeably poorer for some stations than for others with similar QSO numbers. Accurate logging in the heat of a 6m opening is hard work - but it can be done. Use of a database to check whether what you think you heard makes sense is a great aid in these circumstances as check to prompt the operator to seek on air clarification and no more. The combination of the adjudication software and the R1 logs (which were again used) is sufficient to detect and penalise most logging errors.

One station, having completed his 6H on Saturday then decided, for innocent reasons, to resume operations the next morning using a different callsign and make a separate entry into 6H. This is contrary to the rules and the second entry has been treated as a check log. Unfortunately general rule 4f also means the second QSO's claimed by some stations who worked him twice have also been dis-allowed.

The 2020 event was restricted by Covid but the normal pattern resumed in 2021 with portables winning both Trophy's - G8T Blacksheep Contest and DX Group regain the Telford Trophy after several years with a massive score advantage of over twice their nearest competitor. Allan GM4ZUK/P wins Single Operator Open and regains the Six Metre Cup by a significant margin. Congratulations to both stations.
